The LaLiT Great Eastern Kolkata
About The LaLiT Great Eastern Kolkata
The Great Eastern opened in 1840 as the Auckland Hotel, on the site of David Wilson's bakery, and was often described as the first luxury hotel in Asia. Guests over the years included Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling and Queen Elizabeth II. After a long restoration by the LaLiT group it reopened in 2013, keeping its Victorian and Edwardian heritage blocks, with original iron pillars and bay windows, alongside a contemporary new block. It has 215 rooms and suites, an outdoor pool and spa, a pub named after Wilson and a bakery that continues the original business. It sits in the old administrative quarter by Dalhousie Square.
